This factsheet is for young people who need to take steroids as part of anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) treatment for aplastic anaemia.

What are steroids?

Steroids are chemicals that work in lots of different ways to keep your body healthy. Your body makes its own steroids, but they can also be manufactured so they can be given to you as tablets or liquid, or maybe in an injection. Steroids are an important part of keeping you safe and stopping you from feeling unwell while you have anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) treatment for aplastic anaemia.

What’s in this factsheet?

This factsheet explains how steroids can help you, some of the side effects you might notice when you are taking them, and what happens afterwards.
