The International Clinical Trials day at King' on Friday the 18th May was my first. Joined by a number of patients , I heard updates from Dr Lajos Floro and Dr Shreyans Gandhi on the latest clinical trials. Here is a brief summary:

  1. T-reg cells have the potential to revolutionise treatment of patients with aplastic anaemia. These cells are vital for making the immune system work as it should, and could be used in alternative treatment. Phase 1 control trials are likely in the autumn of 2018 once all the ethical approvals have been obtained
  2. RACE trials is a pan-European study, to test treatment of patients with aplastic anaemia using eltrombopag with cyclosporin. Recruitment is still underway, aiming to recruit some 200 patients across 35 countries across the EU. Currently the number of recruits stands at 130, with around 30 - from the UK. The trials will commence once the required patient numbers have been reached.
