Other treatments

Other available treatment options for aplastic anaemia include anabolic steroids (androgens) and alemtuzumab (antibody based therapy). Growth factors such as erythropoietin (Epo) and GCSF usually are ineffective in AA.

A new drug called eltrombopag that stimulates the production of platelets is currently being explored in clinical trials. Some patients have not only shown improvements to their platelet counts but also in their haemoglobin and neutrophil counts.

Eltrombopag is still undergoing clinical trials, however, your haematologist will be able to discuss with aplastic anaemia specialists whether you might be able to take part in them.
