The H1N1 vaccine (Swine Flu vaccine) is a killed vaccine not a live vaccine.
Because of concerns about possible relapse of aplastic anaemia with vaccinations in general, it is not routinely recommended to give swine flu vaccination to non-transplanted patients with aplastic anaemia. However, this should be discussed further with your doctor, and the medical team at King's College Hospital are also available to discuss this further.
There have been two reported cases of relapse of aplastic anaemia following seasonal flu vaccination and hepatitis B vaccination.
The risk of relapse of aplastic anaemia after having a vaccine is difficult to quantitate but the consequences of relapse of aplastic anaemia may be serious. This possible risk of relapse of aplastic anaemia with vaccination also needs to be balanced against the risk of complications after getting swine flu.
